My Grandma was a Cherokee Princess

Post by Admin on Sat May 04, 2013 10:18 am

On the Cherokee Facebook page someone recently posted the question "whose grandma was a Cherokee Princess".

They're not asking this because they actually expect a reply. They're being sarcastic.

There's no such thing as a Cherokee prince or princess. When one white man (Sir Alexander Cuming/Cumming) caught up with the Cherokees he called their leader Emperor rather then simply Chief. And he assumed the chief's children would be princes & princesses. He assumed when the chief died one of his son's would take over. But he assumed wrong.

Titles are not inherited - they are earned. And there's 3 that I know of - Beloved Man (Principal Chief), Beloved Woman & Chief.

Some people were ashamed of being mixed blood so if they spoke of their Cherokee ancestors at all they claimed they were princes or princesses.

So if you were claiming your Cherokee ancestor was a prince or princess I'd quit if I were you. Wink
