    The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper was the first published by Native Americans & also the first published in a Native American language. It was started with the help of Samuel Worcester. Elias Boudinot was the first editor.

    The first issue was published 2/21/1828 in present day Georgia. Boudinot believed removal was inevitable so he was replaced by Elijah Hicks, who was anti-removal, in 1832. The paper ceased publication in 1834 due to the Gov't failing to pay annuity to the Cherokees.
